Testimony from Ezra Koh
Two years ago, I entered the wedding photography industry with a little help from a friend who’s also a full time wedding photographer. Being new to the industry, I had so many questions but answers are hard to find.
Things changed when I met Edmund Leong at a wedding which we were shooting together. Edmund was then the vice-president of Wedding Photographers Association (Singapore) or WPAS, and he put my name in for the networking meeting which was held last year at Yio Chu Kang Grassroots’ Club. I found the meeting useful and informative for wedding photographers as it focused on changing our mindset about industry standards and pricing. I signed up as a member then, but there wasn't any update until the AGM held in February this year.
While I was excited about being elected as one of the committee members at the AGM, I was unsure of what my role will be and what I can help achieve for the Association. But after our first meeting, when our new president, Matthew Tan shared with us his ideas for WPAS, I was really impressed and confident that something good will come out from this Association. Matthew's persistence in wanting WPAS to be the backbone of the wedding photography industry in Singapore made me confident that being a WPAS member will enrich our standards, knowledge and skills while setting new expectations in the market of wedding photography.
I have since learnt a lot from Matthew personally as he has helped me understand about the physics of lighting and angles, which in turn helped to improve the quality of my images. My example is one of continual hunger to learn, so that I will not stay stagnant, but will keep pushing further to improve my skills and of course, my earning power as well!
So look to WPAS as a place to learn and help one another, and view other photographers as friends rather than competitors so that we can grow together. What goes around comes around.
